#33 "We didn't realize that we were making memories, we just knew that we were having fun."

On Thursday we ended up going to the Nevada City Fire Safe Council board meeting to see all the different projects they do and where their money goes towards. The meeting lasted a few hours then we had to pull up scotch broom, and pick up trash behind the fire station. There was so much trash left behind from people that are homeless. By the end of the day we had about 4 bags full of trash and bottles that could be recycled.  We got done and headed back to the fire safe council to have our weekly debrief meeting with Joanne. After the meeting we went back home which everyone was pretty happy about sense it had been spitting cold rain basically all day.
Friday we had an option whether to stay at the fire safe council shredding paper and putting together packets. Or we could go work at three different houses. The reason that we had an option on Friday was because it was supposed to rain all day. I chose to work out in the rain sense 1. The rain doesn't bother me, 2.we were just working in Washington and it rained every day there and 3. I would much rather be working outside than sitting in an office all day shredding paper. The first house that we went to really didn't need much work done other than a few low branches cut. The second house was out in the middle of no mans land it seemed but had some beautiful views. I had to cut off a few branches and then cut back a bunch of vines to clear a small oak tree so donna (our site supervisor) could cut it down. The reason I couldn't was because it was on a fairly large slope. When we started to pack up to go eat lunch the lady who's house we had been working on, came out and gave us chocolate cake! We headed over to donnas house to eat lunch inside which was really nice of her. After lunch our last house was one of the first lady's houses (the lady with skirts around her trees)
we had worked on sense being in Grass Valley. We went back to start 2 controlled burn piles. By the time we got there though, the rain began to come down hard so the fire wouldn't start. We ended the day a little early and went to pick up the group that stayed at the office. When we got home we changed and later on at night we all went out to a tea shop called Elixart herbal lounge. They had a musical group called River Tribe that played improvisational space and earth jams. The music was interesting but pretty good.
Saturday I slept in until 9ish and then ate breakfast while watching "A little Princess". After that I got dressed and the team went out to target. After target we went to Grass Valley and Emily and I went to "Pete's Pizza" sense were required to do at least two "dates" with each team member every round. After the pizza we walked around a bit then I went home while a few other team members stayed and went out on their team dates.
Today I got up at 8 then went to church at 8:30. Everyone who goes to church on my team have decided to go to each others churches ad see what it is like. While in Washington everyone went to a Catholic church with Maddie and I, so today we went to a Lutheran church with Molly. It was pretty fun and everyone was supper nice. I could see the similarities and differences between Catholic churches and Lutheran. Next weekend were planning on going to a Nondenominational church for Aisya.  After church the girls who went to yoga picked us up and we went out to brunch at a local restaurant called humpty dumpty's.  I got the Humpty's special oatmeal which was delicious because it had so much fresh fruit on top. After the restaurant we went home for a while then I came back to Grass Valley to walk around to some more shops. Everyday is a new adventure which I love and can't wait for the next adventures I have while my stay here!

#32 Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.

On Monday we started work at a very old cemetery that had at least 500 bodies buried in it but only about 50 or so marked. There was a giant tree that had started to die so they had to cut it down, then we had to cut the limbs into firewood using chainsaws and the wood splitter.  I have gotten so used to the chainsaw now that I'm picked to use it almost every project and I'm there for when other team mates use it. The weather was amazing! It was so sunny and warm, I'm pretty sure I even got a little sunburn on my face. Because of the cemetery's employees work hours, we ended up getting done early and then had to go home and make fire defensible space around our housing. I'll have to admit, it was pretty boring but it was meaningful work and had to be done. After work we got dressed for P.T. and did a relay race, and played sharks and minnows; which again, was a lot of fun. After P.T. we had a little time before dinner and for some reason I was extremely tired and sore, so I took a 30 minute nap, and by the time I woke up it was time for dinner. At night we had spaghetti and garlic bread, had a meeting then I went to bed.
Tuesday (yesterday) we worked in the cemetery again but this time I wasn't allowed to chainsaw since I had done it on Monday, but was still able to help whoever was chain sawing. We were also able to start the burn pile which was a lot of fun. Along with chopping wood, we also had to put it in their trucks to hull off, so I have definitely gotten my arm workouts in. We ended up finishing a little early again so we had to go home and do a little more defensible space work around our house again, but this time not nearly as much as we had to do on Monday. I actually just raked the leaves in the front yard which was alright because again it was such a beautiful day out. Because we didn't have P.T. yesterday, and because the weather was so nice, I went on a long walk with one of my team mates, Melissa, because on clear days, you are able to see the Sierra Mountains from where we live. We ended up getting dropped off to an lookout that is about 3 1/2 miles away from our house and decided to walk the rest of the way back. At the look out we snapped so many beautiful pictures of the valleys and Sierra mountains! And the walk back had just as beautiful sights. When we got back home I had some time before dinner so cleaned up around my room. For dinner we had chili with rice which was delicious.
Today we woke up around 6 and had P.T. Every week we practice our baselines (how many push-ups and sit-ups we can do, a timed 1 1/2 mile run and sit and reach test to see how much we have improved. I was not looking forward to the run until I saw the sunrise this morning. It was breathtaking and I was able to see it during the whole run. I even cut 4 minutes and 10 seconds off my run time! Yeah! After the run we did the rest of the baselines inside, then ate breakfast, got dressed and went off to an older couples house that needed to have work done around the property. The property was huge and was pretty nice other than little areas where there needed to be a lot of brush removal. I was first put on the task of untangling a mess of branches and then restacking them so all of their ends were facing the same way. The reason we do this is because when the wood chipper comes, the people have a hassle free job. When we were done with that we had a short break and were able to go into the "break room" that the couple set up for us. It was a large area in a room above their garage and even had a large deck attached to it so we were able to have coffee outside. And not to make anyone jealous or anything but todays weather was the best yet! It was so sunny and warm out I just had to tell my dad about it! haha! After the break I cut down about 5 little trees with a handsaw and helped stack more branches that were coming from trees that were from the back yard. By the time we finished that, it was time for lunch which was provided by the couple again! They made us a taco bar and also made us brownies. Again we ate lunch out on the back deck. After lunch I was able to chainsaw in the back yard. It was a little nerve racking because the backyard was a  pretty steep hill and there were a bunch of brush from the conifer trees on the ground. I ended up cutting about 5 smallish trees down then for my last tree I ended up cutting a 25 foot tree down! Granted it wasn't giant but still was a pretty tall tree!  After I cut it down we started to get ready to leave, and the women ended up giving us a brand new Frisbee and soccer ball! When we got home I got changed and then went on our back deck to enjoy the rest of the wonderful weather. I ended up reading for a good amount of time then watched the sunset while listening to my dads "retro radio" that he loaned to me for the rest of my AmeriCorps term. When I came inside it was time for dinner and then after we had an LAA (Life After AmeriCorps) meeting which didn't take long at all.
Tomorrow we are having a meeting with the fire safe council and a few other things that I'm not certain about; but whatever it is I'm excited about it!

#31 "My life is joyously balanced with work and play."

On Thursday we cut firewood all day, which sounds boring but I had a lot of fun, especially since I'm getting a lot more experience with the chainsaw and wood splitter. When we cut one log open we noticed that there were a bunch of little mushrooms that were growing inside! After we were done we went back to the office for a small debriefing with Joanne and then we said goodbye to the girls who left for Las Vegas. Once we dropped them off at the car rental place we headed back to the fire station for the rest of the night. When we got home the sky was so clear that we could see the Sierra mountains in the distance from where we live. So Amanda and I went on a little walk to take a few pictures. For dinner one of my team mates made everyone fried rice which was delicious! And then we watched a harry potter movie.
Friday morning I slept in until 8, took a shower and by the time I was ready, everyone was awake and Amanda was ready to get dropped off at the train station since she was going out with a few other team leaders over the weekend. After we dropped her off the guys dropped me off at the office so I could get a little Wi-Fi and dropped Maddie off for her doctors appointment. When Maddie was done she ended up walking to the office and then we spent the whole day together in Grass Valley. We first went to a small dinner and got some breakfast. I ended up getting biscuits and gravy while Maddie got steak and eggs. After breakfast we walked around to all the different, unique shops. Some of them reminded me of the ones in DeKalb, with their country/vintage flair, and others were the exact opposite with peace signs in the windows and beautiful crystal decorations around the room. That is one thing I think is so interesting about Grass Valley though; the whole town is so diverse but all close together. By the end of the day I bought a Grass Valley sticker for my collection of places I've been and a beautiful opal necklace. When we went back home Maddie and I decide that the kitchen was in desperate need of a deep cleaning so we dusted and mopped the floors, sanitized the counters and cleaned a lot of the kitchen pans. After we were done we went up stairs and watched another hairy potter movie.
Yesterday I slept in again and decided to stay home and get some work done. One thing in particular that I finished was my True North application that in all honesty should have been done a while ago. Other than the application I finished some other paper work that needed to be done. All in all it as a very relaxing day yesterday.
Today I got up around 9 and had breakfast around 10. Around 10:15 I went to the office with Morgan, printed off my application and mailed it off. When we got home we picked up everyone else and headed over to our sponsors house so our major football fans could watch the patriots game; and I could get wifi. So this is where we have been all day and tomorrow starts another full week of work!

Mushrooms growing inside of the log! Once I saw this I thought of the Jurassic Park Quote "Life finds a way"

You can't see the mountains too well in this photo, I just like the moon being in it.

#30 throw kindness around like confetti

Well yesterday we had a long training again and it went way over the time that it said it would be done. We did however get to go to another house and pull scotch broom which was a lot of fun! After that we went back home, changed, then everyone that wanted to go to Nevada city or Grassvalley left. I showed a few of the girls where I had gone and gotten my headband at because they loved it! I went to a few different stores that weren't open when I was first there so was able to check out those. After about two hours we walked back to the van, went home and had supper. At night a few of the girls and I got together and watched the new movie, "sisters" that came out.
Today we went to an older lady's house and worked around it all day. We raked the leaves around the house, cut down some old trees, and trimmed some of the bushes. We even started a burn pile for all the cut down branches/ trees/ leaves. We completed the tasks a lot faster than expected so finished a little earlier than usual. When we got home we changed for PT and played sharks and Minos which must have looked pretty funny watching a bunch of 18-24 year olds competitively playing a game that is usually a grade school activity haha. Tomorrow will be our last day of work for the week since Friday we have off. This weekend I might go to a haunted house tour with a few other teammates while a few of the 21+ girls go to Las Vegas over the weekend.

#29 Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better its not.

A lot has happened this past week. On Tuesday the 12th, silver 6 has officially arrived in grass valley to our new housing which is an old fire station. We only had to drive an hour to get to Grass Valley which was amazing compared to our 13 hour drive to Washington. We arrived around 9 and brought all of our gear into the two story housing and settled in for a little. While we were at home, donna, who works closely with our sponsor came to our house and then had us drive to meet Joanne (our sponsor) and have lunch at a pizza buffet. There we had delicious pizza and were able to talk to them both. Joanne and Donna are both amazing! They are very passionate in what they do and help us out in every way possible. One thing in particular that they love for us to accomplish are bucket list items. Every week they help us do something that we really want to do while in Grass Valley. So that'll be fun to do all the different activities with my team. After lunch we toured around Grass Valley and Nevada City some more. Included in the tour was a over look bridge which I and some of my other team mates were able to climb the rocks down to the water and take some pictures. After the bridge, we went to the actual fire safe council headquarters to talk about what they expect and any other concerns or questions that we had for them. Once we were done talking we went back to the house and settled in a little more. Later on at night we went out to a restaurant that was well known for their hamburgers, so obviously I had to get one and it was delicious. After that we headed back home and went to bed, looking forward to the next day.
Wednesday we didn't have to be ready until 8:30! That's when donna came to our house going over chainsaw safety. After that we went to her family's lumber shop and practiced chain sawing. I did pretty well the first day, but it was pretty different from the first time that I chain sawed. Instead of cutting up smaller pieces I had to cut into a fairly large tree that was on top of two other trees. I had some trouble because I kept getting the tip on the chainsaw into the bottom two trees. On Thursday however I was able to chainsaw again and was a lot more comfortable cutting the log on top of the other two. On Thursday we only practiced chain sawing for 1/2 the day then went to the Nevada County Airport to help dig out a moat around the facilities to drain into a different direction because every time the area gets a lot of rain the water then drains off down to the companies below and floods them out. After that we went home, had PT, made a delicious quinoa/brown rice/veggie dinner and went to bed.
Friday we went to our first house to do fuel reduction!! (If you couldn't tell I was very, very excited.) The property in which we went to was interesting to say the least. The women who owned it is 70 years old and is an artist. The first thing that we noticed when we pulled up to the house were Hawaiian skirts around some of the trees. Behind the house was a good amount of land with a lot of scotch broom (very flammable) and many other different trees. Along with the plants there were a lot of different artwork. There was a section in her yard that had little rocks stacked on top of each other with a crystals on top. In other sections she had different metal structures and in one corner had clothes lines with different colored threads of clothes. The first thing that I did was chainsaw about 6 dead trees down and had to cut them into fire wood. I got a lot more comfortable working with the chainsaw and learning how the correct and safest way to cut down a tree. After about an hour of chain sawing we had lunch and then I was on pulling up scotch broom with some other team mates. Once we had about 25 minutes left I was able to take apart the chainsaw and clean and sharpen it. We finished the day by going to Bentley springs (which is a natural spring water source) to fill up our water bottles.
Saturday was our day off with the exception of people having ISPs working with the Wild and Scenic film festival in Nevada City, Grass valley and surrounding areas. This is a little bit about what the event is.
"The Wild & Scenic Film Festival sits apart from the hundreds of festivals around the world by leaving you feeling INSPIRED and MOTIVATED to go out and make a difference in your community and the world.
As a festival by activists and for activists, Wild & Scenic is organized and produced by SYRCL (the South Yuba River Citizens League). For over a quarter century, we’ve been building a community to protect and restore the rivers of our home watershed, from source to sea. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival puts our local work – and yours too – into the broader environmental and social context, and serves to remind us that we’re participants in a global movement for a more wild and scenic world.
At our festival, you’ll witness how individuals and communities across the globe are taking action and becoming part of the solution on issues ranging from energy, food systems, biodiversity, climate change and the protection and restoration of wild lands and wild waters. You’ll experience the adrenaline of kayaking the wildest rivers, climbing the highest peaks and trekking across the globe with adventure films from around the world. You’ll explore the issues and movements with leading environmental activists and professionals, filmmakers and celebrities. And you’ll celebrate the natural and human world in all its diversity, in 9+ venues for films and workshops, a children’s Saturday morning “cartoons” program, art shows, wine tastings, a Gala Event and awards ceremony."
A few team mates and I decided to go to one of the midday events that was more focused on the issues of farming and their methods. A few of the documentary's that I watched were, AINA: That which feeds us (my favorite), digital food, Farmers speak: A call for the next generation (another good one) and Soil Carbon Cowboys. They all had to do with the importance of farms needing to start growing organically and that it would be a win/win situation because it is a lot more cost efficient for farmers and its healthier for not only humans but the earth. After the movie we picked up some team mates and went back home.
Sunday I had an ISP at the film festival in Nevada City. I arrived there earlier than expected so pat and I went to a small café in town to get some coffee. After that I went back to the venue and met up with the lady in charge. The role that I had was one of the simplest ones a person could have. I had to turn on and off the light, turn them on dim when a speaker was talking and being an usher. The best part was I was able to watch 2 different sessions of movies which totals out to be about 8 films. The first session was called turning into nature which was basically about how people have lost touch with nature and how important it is for kids to go out and explore. Studies have shown that kids are beginning to have new disorders such as Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD) because of parental fears, restricted access to natural areas, and the lure of the screen. One video that really effected me was called "Sonic Sea". The movie was about how there are so many noises in the ocean that don't effect humans but effect all of the wild life below especially whales and dolphins. This is because hearing for whales is the same as sight for humans. I learned that sound travels in water just as fast and far as light travels. So the many giant ships that are in the ocean are effecting the marine life in many ways. One of the ways is from the ships propellers cutting into the water causing millions of air bubbles to explode thus causing a lot of loud, frequent sound for whales/dolphins to have to hear. And if you were to hear a high pitched or long annoying noise people could easily put on headphones, or figure out the problem and turn it off. Well these animals cant do that and it makes them go into flight mode causing them to go up to the surface and become a beached.
The second session was about people needing to leave nature as it is. The main movie was called Voyagers without a trace and the film maker (Ian McCluskey) went on the same kayaking rout through the Grand Canyon as three French friends had done in 1938. The three French adventurers came to the American West to make the first kayak descent of the Colorado and shoot the first adventure film in color. Ian wanted to get in tune with nature and feel what the French trio saw and explored. The movie was amazing and I hope that Ian found exactly what he was looking for. After the ISPs I walked around Nevada City visiting unique little shops and even bought a cute headband that is from Indonesia. I went home with my team later that night and went to bed.
Today (Monday) I woke up around 7:30 and we had PT at 8. We ran and then did different exercises. We then had a little time to change and eat breakfast before we had to go. Today we had a few hours of training on fire safety and fuel reduction. The First half seemed to fly by and we were fed an amazing Thai food that was made by our sponsors sister in law. And then sat through the second training that seemed to go on A LOT longer. After the training we went home and I worked on my application for the True North Program, then had a very tasty vegan dinner and now am at the office finishing up my blog that obviously is very long. Which I'm sorry about but I don't have wifi at my housing so time on the computer is limited!
Tomorrow we will be taking what we learned into action and will be going around to houses to see if they have the correct fire defensible space. The rest of the week I should be going around to houses to do fuel reduction and checking to see if they have a safe defensible space. And then Friday we do have off because we didn't have today off. So I will hopefully make it to grass valley/ Nevada City a little more.

Saw this quote and thought it fit well with my post this week.
Only after the Last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then you will find that money can not be eaten.

#28 When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I stood in my living room on Tuesday the 5th, knowing I wouldn't see it for another 7 months, while my mom was printing out my plane ticket to go back to Sacramento. The lump in my throat got too much to bear and I started to tear up. That's when my dad asked what was wrong and of course it was because I was leaving again. So my mom asked "do you want to go back?". And the question took me by a little surprise actually because I thought that this was a one and done deal, I sign up for it I finish it out. Although the offer did sound intriguing, I knew that if I had stayed I wouldn't be able to learn. Being back home with my friends and family was wonderful because it's what I used to be comfortable to. But over the past two months of being away I have realized that I'm fine with not having that certainty of what will happen the next day or even the next month for that matter. I figured that I will never have this kind of opportunity to learn and see the world again. I said no, I'm just going to miss everyone again is all; and we left to go to the airport.
I arrived back on campus around 6 and started unpacking. I was pretty tired from the flight so I went to bed. Wednesday through friday were pretty laid back with occasional meetings.
Saturday my team had an ISP vollunteering for Soil Born Farms again, but this time we were working particularly with Harvest Sacramento. This is a little bit about Harvest Sacramento....
"Harvest Sacramento germinated from a seed planted by two area residents, Mary McGrath and Robin Aurelius, who were pained by the sight of rotting oranges piled in the streets of East Sacramento every spring.  A grassroots campaign to harvest oranges in the McKinley Park area engaged over 30 volunteers and donated about 3000 pounds of fresh citrus to the Sacramento Food Bank in early 2009.  From this success it was apparent that with more organization and effective outreach, substantial contributions of fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the entire year could greatly enhance the offerings of local food assistance agencies.  With the continued support of the founding and new volunteers, Soil Born Farms has taken a lead role in tending this young seedling that we know as Harvest Sacramento."
How amazing is that! It only took two people with an idea, to change a full city! If that doesnt make you want to make a difference within your community, I don't know what would. Anyways, so my team got to the meeting area and there were about 35 vollunteers there. We talked in a big circle for the first 30 minutes waiting for everyone to arrive; and while we were talking there were lots of people asking who we were and what Americorps is. Once everyone arrived, we were split up into groups and headed out into different neighbor hoods picking from poeple donating fruit from their trees. It was so much fun picking the fruit and talking to the group that I was in. I talked to two girls that were the same age as me and going to a local college. They asked what I do exactly and they kept saying wow, I wish I did that! I was pretty honered to hear that  because never would I think that I would do something in my life that others would envy me for. The last house that we went to was by far my favorite. The lady had a large garden and in the center of it all was a beautiful orange tree, that she told us she loved to look at from her back window. We had about 5 buckets full of oranges that smelled heavenly and tasted amazing. When we were done picking, we packed up and headed back to where we all started. We then took all of our citrus fruits and organized them into the big bins that will go to the local food pantrys. We all left the event with a small bag of some of the fresh fruit that we picked, and a smile. At night we had a small meeting and that was it.
Today we had a few long trainings that really stunk because the weather was perfect. We also had to pack our green bag up to put into the storage bins. Along with packing the infamous red bag for our second spike that we will be leaving for on tuesday. It always seems to be a struggle packing because when you think your all done, you turn around and realize that you have a pile of clothes that you had orriginally wanted to pack, or a pile of dishes you needed to bring. I'm sure by the fourth spike, I will be a pro packer! but we'll see haha.
Tomorrow we have our baselines (where we run a mile and a half, see how many puch-ups, sit-ups we can do, and a sit and reach test). Personally I think we should have done baselines before we left for winter break sense we had the time and because it would have given a more accurate score of how much we had improved from the first baseline. I see it just like in school, when we would take our finals after winter break... its not showing the improvemnt. Along with baselines we will also have our briefing to do in front of our UL and some of the other staff. Then like I said on tuesday we leave for 9 months! I should have comupter access so hopefully will be able to keep up on my blog!

                                                                                                                                        ~Savannah

#27 Page 1 of 365

On Dec. 24th (Christmas eve) I said goodbye to my room mates and headed to the airport at 11 AM for my 3pm flight back home for the holidays! And I know I didn't mention going home at all in my blog, but it was because I was planning to surprise a few of my friends. Anyways I arrived in Illinois around 8:30 and was picked up by my parents. We then got my bags and headed to my uncle and aunts house to celebrate a quick Christmas Eve sense I missed the rest of the party. When I got to their house I walked through the door and to my surprise they held up a giant banner that said "Welcome home savannah!". It was such a nice evening catching up with them and I couldn't wait for Christmas to come so I would be able to see the rest of my family. At night I wrapped my presents that I got for my family and then went to one of my good friends house. She wasn't home yet from a Christmas party so I helped her brother and one of his friends wrap some gifts before I surprised her. When I saw her pull into her drive way, I went up to her room and sat in one of her chairs. when she opened her door I said a simple "Hi Tia" and at first she was a little stunned, then had the biggest smile on her face, ran up to me and gave me a huge hug. We talked for a while, then I went home and got to sleep in my  queen size bed.
Christmas morning, I went to church with my family, out for breakfast and then went home and opened presents. My plan was to take a shower, get ready, surprise my other friend Olivia then head out to my grandmas for Christmas... well those plans quickly changed when I laid down for a "quick" nap. I ended up being woken up to my mom saying "savannah c'mon were going to be leaving to go to grandmas in 15 minutes." What was supposed to be a short 30 minute nap turned into 4 hours. I had to veto surprising Olivia, and instead took a fast shower and get ready. I ended up being late to my grandmas but was still very excited to see everyone. after a fun filled evening with my family I headed over to surprise Olivia and boy was she surprised to see me at the door! All in all Christmas eve and Christmas day was filled with love, laughter and family.
The rest of my break consisted of hanging out with friends, sleeping in (A Lot) and I was able to complete 2 independent service projects (ISP's) at the Saint Vincent De Paul food pantry at Saint Mary's church. Being able to work within my community was a blast because these are the people that I see around town; and knowing that I am giving back to my community is an amazing feeling.
For New Years I went over to my cousins house to celebrate 2016. I realized that many people say "New Year, New Me"; but in all honesty I don't want to be a "new me" I want to continue bettering myself and leaning throughout this new year. 2016 I know will be filled with even more adventures and excitement. I plan on taking this year a day at a time and loving every minute of it.
