#26 "My day begins and ends with gratitude and joy."

Friday we finished our drive back home to California. Everyone was in good spirits to finish the drive. On the way back home it started to snow! Thankfully not enough to interfere with driving. We got back to campus around 1pm. One of my room mates was already back and cleaning out her van with her team. Once I got out of the sardine stuffed van, she ran up to me and gave me a huge hug. After talking to her, my team had to put our red bags back into our rooms and then we had to go back into the van to drive to the nearest super market to buy lunch and dinner. We each had $15 each so I bought some soup, a small loaf of bread, yogurt, cheese and a box of crackers. After the market we went back to campus and went back to our rooms. I decided to put some things away and pull a small prank on my one room mate who wasn't home yet. So I took her mattress of her bed, propped it up by the window, sprinkled some confetti around it and stuck a note on it saying, "Welcome home Alyssa! Love Savannah and Chelsea". Later that night I went to help my TL retrieve all of our green duffle bags that were in the storage container over our first spike. Once I was back I ate some dinner and once I was done Alyssa came home! She gave me a big hug too and got a kick out of her surprise in the room. At night my room mates and talked about all the fun adventures we had and then watched Jurassic World together.
Saturday we (My room mates and I) woke up late and decided to spend most of the day together because we had missed each other so much. And partly because all the teams needed a little break from one another. I decided to make some pancakes while my room mates started to put away some things. When I came back up we decided to try to get into the holiday mood and watch Christmas movies, paint our nails and drink hot coco. We ended up watching The Grinch and the Polar Express; and painted our nails a deep red. At night we wanted to drive over to panda express for dinner but couldn't because there was no one to drive us. Instead I had Alyssa teach me to knit, which took a while but after about the 5th try I got the hang of it.
Sunday I had to help the team clean out the rest of the van around 11. When I went outside it felt like we were still in Washington with drizzly, cold and windy rain. In the afternoon we were able to go to Panda Express with one of my room mates and two of my team mates for lunch. While Chelsea and I went to Panda, the other two headed over to Starbucks to get some WiFi. After panda we walked over to Starbucks as well so I would be able to work on some documents. After a while we went back to campus and then at night, I was on duty in the main building with my team. I had to circle around the building with 2 other team mates to make sure there was no suspicious activity. My team mates were a little on ease because that day there was a report of a strange man trying to get into some of the buildings, that seemed to have bloody looking hands. But everything was okay because the police were around the campus almost 24 hours. After duty we all went back to our rooms and went to bed for the early morning.
Monday I woke up at 5:30 to get ready for PT. That morning it was windy, spitting rain and was 40 degrees out. All I could think of was my moms voice saying "Well goooood morning" having to wake up to that. For PT we had to do relay races on the field. After PT I went back to my room to see my one team mate (in the green unit) still in bed, and my other room mate who is also in the silver unit, laying on the floor. I asked her what she was doing and apparently she had fainted in the bathroom and all I could of think was the reasoning was that the temperature difference from outside to the dorm, possible sleep deprivation and not enough water. After making sure she was okay, I took a shower and got ready for our project debrief that we had that day. First though we had a community meeting with all of the units and staff. They congratulated us on our work and then we had a small activity. For this activity we had to go over to the state we lived in and talk about what we miss, what we don't miss, what our favorite activity was...etc. I was surprised by how many people came from Illinois, and it was nice being able to talk to all of them about home. Right after the meeting my team had our team debrief. This is when you have to talk about your project you just completed. We reflected on the type of work we did, what we learned, our individual and team struggles, our likes and dislikes and anything else about the project that we wanted to talk about, to our Unit Leader and staff. After the meeting I went back to my room and hung out with my room mates and knitted before I had to change and cook dinner. I ended up making burritos, with a few other team mates and we ate around 7pm. After dinner I cleaned, hung out with my roommates and then went to bed.
Tuesday I had to wake up at the same time for PT, and really I was convinced that we would do something fun for PT. I don't know why but I had a feeling we would. I was completely wrong because it was the same kind of weather as Monday, and we had to run around the field and do different exercises. After PT we had about 2 hours to get ready for our Unit celebrations. The Silver unit decided to do a potluck breakfast with the teams. The food you had to make had to represent your project in some way. My team made a squash/kale/feta cheese dish that we had at our "friendsgiving".  I thought the other teams meals were also pretty creative. Silver 1 had pop-tarts because they said their team basically lived off them, turkey slices to represent all the turkey they distributed over the thanksgiving weekend and Hawaiian rolls to represent them being a little bitter about not being chosen to go to Hawaii for the next round. Silver 4 (I believe) had made dirt cups with starburst on tooth picks sticking out to represent them getting very muddy during their projects and them having to flag different trees with ribbon. All in all the celebration was a hit being able to eat and talk to different teams about their projects. After the celebration I had nothing else planned for the day so just hung out around campus with different team mates and my room mates.
Today I woke up around 8, went on a walk with one of my team mates and then got coffee. Today is more directed to the TLs and ATL (Assistant team leader) meetings. I did apply to be the ATL for the next round but lost to molly, who I believe is perfect for that position. The ATL is basically there for the TL for what ever they may need assistance on. Molly will now have to help run meetings, finance and step up as the TL when Amanda is not there. So in a way today is sort of my day off from normal work.
I've been pretty sad not being able to be home over the holiday season but it'll be okay, I've had my team mates to celebrate with!

                                                                                                                                           ~Savannah

I found it humorous that they had a cubs ornament in an Oregon hotel

This was the sunset last night (Tuesday). Seeing the sunset made me think of what my grandpa used to tell me. "Sunset at night, sailors delight. Sunset in the Morning, sailors warning." It has always been true in my eyes. Especially because of how amazing today's weather has been! Warm and sunny!

#25 "Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory."

Tuesday was our last work day with MTSG. I stayed at the base with Maddie, cleaning tools putting the boiled linseed oil on the wood to protect them from water and then we were able to work in the tree nursery the rest of the time. The rest of my team went to rattle snake ledge and hiked a steep 2 miles up which took them an hour and a half. Once they were back we went home and we started to deep clean around the house.
Wednesday was our last official day in Washington. Instead of working, the mountains to sound crew decided to have a going away celebration with us and we first watched a documentary about the lumber business then went on a bike ride around North Bend seeing different projects that they have been working on, or plan to work on. The bike ride was amazing! The weather was in our favor yesterday, being that it was blue sky's and sunny all day. We ended up biking 7 miles and visited about 3 different sights. After the amazing bike ride we went to Twin Peaks Café which in the old SiFi show "Twin Peeks" the café was called "RR2GO! The team went there with about 3 members of the MTS crew to do a final debriefing of our time here. We talked about all the positives and a few of the negatives over the course that we have been in Washington. I told them how this first spike has made an amazing impact on my life. From the trail work to the trips in Seattle to different museums. Everyone I have talked to, has helped me find something that truly interests me. And I can not wait for the upcoming projects to learn more.
After saying our final goodbyes we were off to go back to our house to pack up the van, final cleaning and sleep for the last time in our house.
Today we piled up in the van at 7am and set off for California. The drive seemed to go by really fast. We got to the hotel here in White City Oregon around 5:30. Right away I went in the pool and swam around while a few of my team mates went into the weight room. Around 7 our TL came down and asked what we wanted for dinner from a Chinese restaurant that we were ordering take out from.
After we all told her I went up and took a shower. Once I was done the food was here; so I sat in the room with a few other team mates and we watched "The breakfast club" and now I'm watching "16 candles".  Tomorrow we are leaving at 7 and finishing up the rest of the drive back to campus.

#24 "A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor."

Saturday we had a tree planting volunteer event in between Tiger Mountain and Squawk Mountain.  We only had 600 trees to plant and a good amount of volunteers despite the constant rain. The event was really supposed to be till 3 in the afternoon but the volunteers were going lightning speed so it only took until around 1:30! And that's including a lunch break. While I was on my lunch break I was able to call my family because  my brother was graduating from Illinois State University, Saturday morning. I was really upset that I wasn't able to attend the big event. And I know there will be other events, but graduating college is a pretty big deal in my eyes. Holidays come every year; graduations are a one and done deal.
So I just want to take a moment and congratulate Zack for graduation from ISU.  I was in high school for basically his whole college life. I went down almost every year with our mom and dad to drop him off; and every time we would pull away from the building I would start to get a little teary eyed. I loved when he came home for the weekends and over the long breaks because when I got home from school I'd be able to hangout with him (and anna!). I know he worked hard throughout his college career and had some long nights finishing homework and studying for finals. But he won't have to worry anymore because the long nights of studying are behind him. But.. the long nights of searching for a job are in the clear. Hehe
Sunday was a eventful day. We woke up early and I got ready for my ISP in Seattle. We got to the MOHAI museum around 8 and I found out that the ISP wasn't until 12:30 so I decided to go with three other team mates to the REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) store. The store was giant! The way you got into the store was taking a little "hike" on a path to the front of the store. Everything in the store was outrageously priced. One thing being a small bronze colored bracelet that had a simple compass on it that was $30. After we were done I decided that it was time for me to head back for the ISP while the girls went around Seattle. When I got back I had time to spare so I had some lunch and walked around the docks. I then met up with the other two team mates to the boat and got started. For this ISP we were in the middle section of the boat and I was in charge of using the heat gun on the 100 year old paint, to melt it, then scrape it off. What they are doing is restoring the boat into what it looked like around the 30s. I learned that it was the oldest light house boat in the country that is being restored. Not only that, but there are only about 10 of those kinds of boats left in the country. About half way through the ISP we got a tour. I saw where the officers, captain and crew would have stayed, and the engine room. The tour guide who was also the man in charge of the renovation, was extremely knowledgeable of the historic boat, and boats in general from how all the machines work, to what kind of wood boats are generally made from. After we were done we started to walk to meet up with a few team mates at the Bill Spedials underground tour which is a the old Seattle city underneath Seattle. As we were walking I got a call from one team mate that was there and she said the tour had just been sold out. So Morgan who was with pat and I decided to go to the whole foods store, while we went to find a Starbucks so we would be able to charge our phones. We ended up going to 3 different Starbucks and all 3 were closed! We then found a large Barnes & Noble and headed over there. To my amazement, there were only 4 outlets that were right next to each other in the most inconvenient spot. So I tried to charge my phone for a few minutes because I was set on going to the underground city tour. In the mean time one other teammate met up with pat at the store, so I decided to try to get to the tour on my own. Well I put the directions in my phone and it seemed fairly easy. I started to walk to get to 1st avenue. As I was walking there was 8th avenue and in my head I thought "Okay next would be 7th". But it wasn't. So I looked back at my phone and it was telling me to go in completely different directions!  So I crossed the street and started to walk back. I gave up when I realized I had basically gone in a complete square. I headed back and tried to charge my phone again until Morgan came to the Barnes & Noble and told me we had to head back, get the van and pick everyone up. Awesome another 30 minute walk, in the rain, at night. We fast walked all the way back and were relieved when we got in the van... Until.... The car wouldn't start. Just our luck. We waited for about 15 minutes until I saw people walking back to their car in the parking lot that we were in. The 3 guys were super helpful and got the car back up an running in 5 minutes. We then picked everyone up and headed home. We got back around 9, then had a very relaxing PT at 9:30. All in all, a very eventful day.
Monday was A LOT more laid back. I woke up around 9 and went to Sandy's Espresso in town with two other girls. We stayed there until 10:15 then drove to Melissa's physical training for her leg, while Aisya and I went to the McDonalds to finish up a little work, and for me to work on my blog. We were there for a good 35 minutes then headed back home. I packed a lot of my clothes up for when we go back to the campus. then around 12 made some lunch (Chicken fettuccini alfredo), and then went on a walk with the girls for pt. It was such a nice day out! I saw BLUE SKYS and the SUN today! So after the walk I sat outside just soaking up the sun until a large cloud covered it up. After that I packed again, and then we went to the laundry mat doing our last wash before we head back to California.

#23 "I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was."

Wednesday I awoke to thunder, lightning and a whole lot of rain. The night before they were calling for heavy rain and flooding. And boy did we get it! Around 8 AM Amanda told us the news that we were not going into work for the day because we were basically on an island with all the flooding. We were all relieved except the fact that we realized we had very little amounts of electricity, our water was not working anymore and our refrigerator was one of the appliances that shut down. But it wasn't all bad because as people were starting to wake up, Amanda told us that we had to read about rattle snake ledge (where we were most likely working sometime this week). As the first two of my team mates were reading one of them got extremely excited and was jumping up and down. The second team member, molly, started to scream with excitement. I figured that they couldn't be that excited for where we would be working on Rattle Snake Ledge. So I quickly scanned over the paper and at the bottom was a bit of information on our next project sight!!
Our next project will be in Nevada County, CA. working with the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County. For this project we will be living in an old fire house (how cool is that!) and will be working primarily with the community! So exciting!! Once we all found out the big news we got ready and thanks to Camp Korey, were able to hangout at one of the lodges at the camp. I felt as if I was living the life of luxury there with running water, electricity, TV, WiFi, and a small fireplace that would turn on with a flip of a switch. We all took advantage of the wifi because as we near the end of our first project, it is almost like finals having to turn in different documents and write papers. Although we had TV I was surprised that I really didn't watch it. I have become so accustomed to not having TV that it no longer interests me.  At night Melissa and I made Christmas cookies and banana bread. And because it was one of our team mates birthdays we all got together and watched the Rise of the guardians. Once the movie was finished we were told that our electricity was back on so we were able to go home (I was really hoping that we would be able to stay the night at the bunk, but oh well).
Yesterday (Thursday) we were all thinking that we would have another day off because of the floods. Until around 10:00 we got the okay that the roads were open. So at 11:00 we left to work for 1/2 the day. We went to the same park we had been at a few days ago, grubbing black berry with the WCC crew.  It sure was a muddy mess but the weather was cooperating for us. After work we came back home and quickly had PT, then went straight to the library so we would have WiFi to work on some of our papers. One of the tasks is to write a reflection on 1 of the 5 questions given. I chose to answer "What changes in your life do you want to make as a result of this learning experience?" This was my answer.
"The changes in which I want to make in my life, as a result of my learning experience is
to focus on the homeless. On Thanksgiving day we had an ISP near Seattle Washington. We were to help the Lutheran church serve the homeless a Thanksgiving meal. I was in charge of greeting the people as they came into the church. Some had a smile on their face, and were thanking us. Some not so much. When I was done greeting people, I sat down with one lady and started to talk to her. I ended up learning about many big events in Sandy's life and thought, wow she has had such amazing experiences, but now is traveling from home to home living on what she has in her bags. While talking to Sandy there was a spark that was set within me. I want to help the homeless get back on their feet and start a new beginning. I want to feed and clothe as many as possible.  When you pass someone on the side of the road holding up a sign saying "hungry, please help" many people go straight to judgmental thoughts before realizing that they are a human being. Parents, siblings, neighbors, and sadly many veterans are those among the homeless. And the numbers are rapidly rising. Many of them have lost all hope, but as sandy did for me, I hope to ignite the same kind of light for each person I meet."
Yes what I wrote sounds a little cheesy but I mean every word in which I wrote. I'm not sure exactly how I plan on doing this, I just know its something that I feel compelled to do.

Today Silver 6 headed to Rattle Snake Ledge. My TL asked if my ankle was doing fine and really my ankle has been feeling great the past couple days. But if I were to hike up the mountain and somehow twist it a little, essentially the past couple days in which it has been getting better would be a waste. I am however getting time in which I do work for peer helper meetings and computer work. And I am ahead of my work hours so this one day to complete work is fine.
Tomorrow I am excited to work with more volunteers planting trees. Then this weekend I have an ISP with a few other team mates, in Seattle. We will be sailing on a sailboat first and once we are back, will be cleaning around the boat. After that I plan on touring Seattle because it will be the last chance I have before we return back home to Sacramento. On Monday I plan on going to different small towns with one of my team members, while the rest go snow shoeing.

#22 "Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt"

I'm a little behind on my blogging, so I will try to catch up on this past week.
Wednesday we worked at discovery park which we just had to pull ivy from the ground and the trees in which they were taking all of the nutrition from. We were pulling the ivy for the tree planting event that will be going on I believe next week. While we were there we walked over to a sandy area looking out over the water. It was absolutely beautiful with Mt.Rainier  in the back. Once we were done, we headed to the Washington State Convention Center for the annual Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust event. My team was invited as guests to attend this event which is a pretty big deal because the sponsors, the faculty and everyone on the trusts board comes out to see the accomplishments over the last year and the projects that will be going on this year.  When my team got there, they were still setting up the venue; which gave us enough time for the meeting we had with our unit leaders supervisor. He asked us different types of questions varying from how the project is going and what we have enjoyed most, to if we have any idea of what we want to do after the program. After the meeting we all rushed to the bathrooms to dress for this semi formal event. But because were AmeriCorps and LOVE to match all the time! We got dressed in our Amerituxes. We looked a lot like the waiters is all I'm going to say... During the "cocktail hour" we were encouraged to mingle with the sponsors and board members. I'm not going to lie it was a bit of a struggle for me. Why? I'm not entirely sure because they are just people. But I figured out that I'm also nervous of people asking me a bunch of questions about the program, and I not knowing the answer. Practice makes perfect though! So I started to have a conversation with a semi young couple. Of course their first question was about the oh so lovely uniform I had on, and asked what organization I was from. I started explaining what AmeriCorps NCCC was and that we were working with the trust etc.. And I found out a lot about the couple as well! They were high school sweet hearts, both went to college in Michigan; then into the peace corps. They moved to the UK raising their two kids, then moved to Washington  for the husbands job (he works for Microsoft). Once we were done talking it was time to go into the dinning area which had really windows around the whole venue, sparkling lights hanging from the ceilings, and piano music playing in the background. Amanda, Emily and I sat at the same table with two different couples, a guy from the WCC crew, and a guy and girl who were there separately. The first course was a salad with poached pears. The main course was between salmon or a squash ravioli. I wanted to try the salmon because I have never had it before. It was definitely a different taste to say the least. And I'm glad I tried it but I suppose if I had grown up eating salmon I would have enjoyed it a little more. At the end of the event we went back home and straight to bed.
Thursday we woke up early and headed back to discovery park to finish up the small section that we were working with. I don't know why but that whole day I felt pretty sick. My guess was that the fish was too oily. Throughout the day I felt better though. On Thursday we actually had a half day because our supervisor, Natasha, wanted to show us a museum in Seattle called MOHAI: Museum of History and Industry. The museum was amazing and I learned a lot! I learned that the "rain globe" was invented in Seattle (obviously because it rains there a whole lot more than it snows), two high school students made the calf high socks that had the Seattle skyline design around them. They also had an exhibit of the Native American tribe in the Seattle area. While I was going through the exhibit I was opened up to different tribes, beautiful legends on how different animals were created and why. I now have a love and fascination on Native American history, culture and legends.
After the museum we headed home and enjoyed a vegetable stew.
Friday the team was heading back to squawk mountain to work on the trail some more, while I was told to stay back at the base doing different tasks (because everyone is worried about my ankle which in my opinion is fine) But I wasn't complaining. I wanted to learn different ways to take care of tools. After my team left I first had to clean off shovels,  WD-40 all the loppers, organize a bunch of different flags (that they use for flagging small trees), label new tents, sand the shovel handles and rub them with boiled linseed oil. Then my team got back, picked me up and we headed home.
Saturday was another rainy day but just like every Saturday, a volunteer event! Yay!
This event was another treeplanting day. Most of the volunteers were high school students getting required volunteer hours. It was a lot easier to explain what to do with these students than the employees for different companies. Still a little weird knowing that I was in their shoes only a few months ago. I ended up cutting my hand a little on a metal pole that we use to put the trees into the ground. Once I did that I feel like many of my teammates have never seen blood before because most of them were freaking out. I was telling my dad that ever since coming here I have been such a klutz! Oh well the scratch will heal.
On Monday (our 1st day off) me and a few of my team mates really wanted to go to the pool to simply stretch out and relax. We first dropped off the rest of the girls to a small town on the way. After that we headed to the Snoqualmie Aquatic Center! It was really nice! We first went into the hot tub which was very relaxing. Then to the lazy river which, in my opinion, wasn't very lazy! It took you around one of the sides fairly quick and then there was a section that I believe were supposed to be nice arches of water, but in reality liked to spray you hard in the face haha. After the lazy river we went back and forth to the hot tub and normal pool area. Once done, we headed back home and relaxed.
Sunday (which was supposed to be another day off) we went to Oxbow farm for a tour. The farm had a few different greenhouses that were really nice. The farm grew a lot of native plants in their nursery. After the tour we had an hour till we had to leave for our ISP. Our ISP we went to Camp Korey to clean out an old barn that they have converted into a hangout area for their campers. We had to dust out the attic, then put all the instruments that were in the lower level up to the top. On the lower level we had to scrape off old paint to prepare it for the new coat that they will be putting on later this week. When we got home I had to help my team members (who are in charge of the vehicle and tools safety) take out all the seats in the van so they were able to clean out the inside. After they did that they took me and a couple other team mates to Starbucks so we would be able to get WiFi. However our WiFi time got cut short because somewhere there was a mix up in drivers and where we were driving because we also had to pick up the tree that MTS donated to us. long story short, it was a long day that ended in driving 25 minutes to pick up a tree.
Today we were working with the WCC crew again. It has been raining non stop today. And not the soft drizzly rain; or the on and off rain. But the constant buckets upon buckets of rain that soak through our rain gear. So yes, to answer any questions, the rain gear does not work that well. We first had an hour long meeting with one of the MTS employees who explained how much help both crews are doing to restore the natural habitat for the salmon. After the meeting we toured one of the restoration sites which was pretty neat. After the tour we went to work at another restoration site where there were blackberry's overgrowing many of the small trees that were planted only a couple years ago. We ended around 3:30 and headed back home where we had PT 30 minutes after we were home, dinner (build your own taco), and now we are at the Laundry mat.
Tomorrow we are planning on going to Rattle Snake ledge for only 1/2 the day because there is supposed to be major flooding in the Carnation area again, and we don't want to be stuck with that again. I'm so sad that next weekend will be our last in Washington, but it definitely has been a great time here thus far!

#21 "Do something today that your future self will thank you for."

Today was our first day back after our nice thanksgiving break. We ended up going to a different trail other than the rattle snake one (that has the steep 2 mile hike up). Instead we went to Squawk trail that is near Tiger Mountain. Which was only a mile hike to our work site. There we were restoring a hiking trail by loping down the dead plants on the side of the trail. It was a relatively easy day other than carrying the tools up but it wasn't that bad of hike. The weather was beautiful and a bit warmer than usual. After work we hiked back down and went home. Another team mate and I were in charge of making dinner tonight so we made brots, baked beans and seasoned potato wedges which were amazing!! While everything was cooking we had PT that consisted of a lot of ab workouts and resistance bands. After PT and dinner we all went to the laundry mat and by then everyone was pretty tired and personally, I started to feel how tired my legs and arms were from today's work and PT haha.
Tomorrow we are working at a new site that used to be an old army base which was taken down so they could restore natural habitat. Then at night our team is invited to a fancyish dinner! So that aught to be fun!
Not much else to post about for today. One scary thing that happened was during break at work I looked down on my sweatshirt and there was a very large black spider crawling on me. And I'm happy to inform you all, I difknt freak out at all!

#20 "Not all treasure is silver and gold"

Today is our last day of thanksgiving break. Last night I went to pick up a the few members at the bus station, that were coming back from Canada. It was great seeing all of them again after Maddie and I being outnumbered by the boys over the full break.
Today was another slow day; which was alright being that tomorrow we will have to hike up 2 miles uphill to get to our work site. At 2 we had PT and hiked into the woods to a old movie set that was made on Carnations property. The movie was made in 2012 and is called "lucky them". We looked around the old movie set and even went inside the old houses and tipi that they used in the movies. I felt as if I had just found the lost boys camp from "PeterPan"! It was so interesting and even a little eerie going inside the houses because they looked like people were still living inside of them. After we left we hiked back to our house and we left to go to the grocery store. While some of my team mates were in the grocery store, I'm at the Starbucks near by (for the Wi-Fi) so I'm able to blog. After this one team mate of mine and I are planning to rent a Christmas move and bake Christmas cookies! yum :)
I'm excited and (trying to) mentally prepare myself for tomorrows hike up on rattle snake mountain. And I'll try to post about the experience tomorrow after all our meetings.
